Cutest baby killer whale kisses!

Yes, these killer whales have paint on their chins. This is a part of a self-awareness test that helps prove cetacean intelligence. At first, these orcas could not see the paint on them. However, when a mirror was placed in front of them, they attempted to look for the paint on their body. They connected that the paint on the reflected whales was actually on their own bodies - therefore, they recognized their own reflections. Self-recognition is affiliated with complex intelligence.
That’s amazing and awesome!

I had often thought about this myself, particularly after reading the books. While I’m not quite sure if it’s the correct pronunciation or not, I prefer to pronounce the term as “day-mon” versus “dee-mon.” This is due to the negative connotation of the latter. I noticed the movie pronounced it that way and felt that that didn’t help the movie win any favors with the non-book reading crowd. Because they are not evil or “demons” at all. I love the idea that you could converse with your inner core and interact with it, and found it fascinating that your daemon was of the opposite sex. Pullman wrote the daemons so brilliantly that I yearned (and still do) to cross over into Lyra’s world and have my soul appear as a talking animal.
As to what mine would be, I’ve often wondered. I know it would not be a dog, because I certainly am not one to be dominated. But I could see it being a wolf, because a wolf can run with a pack but also be independent. It can be a leader or a follower. It can play and goof off, but also be organized and on-task. It can be fiercely loyal to those it loves, and hold a grudge against any who transgresses that loyalty or those it is loyal to. I’d like to think that’s who I am, deep down. While it would be neat for my daemon to be a dolphin, or more specifically an orca (which possesses the same types of qualities), I would not like being 100% tied to the sea (though I love the sea and living near it). Plus, I would not be able to cuddle it so easily whenever I want.
Gives new meaning to “hugging yourself.”
One day, hopefully sooner rather than later, I will visit Alaska and see wild orcas like this. That is one of my biggest dreams.
Looks like this dog is as entranced by the whales as we would be!
I cannot express enough how jealous I am of this dog. If I were this dog, I’d probably be passing out from the sheer awesome.
But this dog is more like, “Huh. Are you watching this too? Huh.”
“O HAI!”
“O HAY!”
Remarkable painting done by Christian Riese Lassen.
